Enhancing XY cuts on a homemade wire EDM machine is already a significant achievement for many hobbyists, and even small workshops stand to benefit from low-cost wire EDM solutions. However, relying solely on simple 2D toolpaths limits the potential of wire EDM technology. High-end industrial wire EDM machines utilize advanced XYUV kinematic configurations, enabling the wire to tilt and perform complex, tapered cuts—features typically exclusive to large-scale equipment.
Currently, generating G-code for such sophisticated operations remains a challenging task, and running these machines without encountering various issues is equally complex. This is where Alex Treseder’s exceptional work sets a new standard. Drawing on years of experience, he has developed an innovative DIY XYUVZ wire EDM machine that is remarkably accessible and straightforward—arguably the most refined design aimed at hobbyists to date.
Thanks to his deep understanding of wire EDM, Alex has addressed many common frustrations, ensuring easy access to the tool and wire guides while maintaining convenient access to the workpiece, autothreading and an integrated hole popper. His thoughtful design incorporates all these considerations seamlessly. Moreover, he provides a GCode generator specifically tailored for this machine that is capable of generating XYUV Gcodes but can also be used for regulat GCode.
The G-EDM firmware already supports XYUV control and includes features to simplify operation, such as linked jog motions (e.g., XU and YV can move together) and plans for automatic probing routines for vertical wire alignment. Although Alex is not officially affiliated with the G-EDM project, his dedicated efforts and innovative approach position his machine as the standard for the firmwares XYUV configuration — bringing advanced wire EDM capabilities within reach of hobbyists and small workshops alike.
